Chapter eleven

Colin

The ground’s chill seeped into Colin’s legs as he adjusted the scope. The first two thugs exiting the municipal building were the same two from the previous smoke break. He and Whitney had settled into prone positions behind a rise in the landscape on the other side of the highway, and he was teaching her how to use her scope.

“Look through here. I’ve got you adjusted perfectly.” He slid the automatic rifle over to her and positioned the stock into her shoulder properly, then guided her hand into the correct placement on the muzzle. “You see them? It’s the same guys from—”

A prolonged, deafening blast of gunfire from Whitney’s barrel sprayed wildly into the beige building, rounds ripping through the two gangbangers.

“Ha!” she whooped. “I got ‘em!”

“Holy feck, Whitney, you’re away with fairies, aren’t ya?” His family accent was bubbling to the surface with his fright. Frozen, he gripped the dirt with white knuckles, expecting the doors to explode outward with a throng of MS13 recruits screaming for blood. Anxious seconds flopped by, but no reinforcements spilled out into the parking lot from the huge pole barn. The noise brought June, Jacob, and Gil to the ridge instead, terror in their eyes and silent screams floating out of their mouths.

Whitney ejected the empty cartridge and replaced it with a new one before calmly rolling over onto her hip to face Colin and the rest of the group. “I guess there were only two of them. Shall we see if our buses are in there and then go find the rest of these motherfuckers?”

Colin scrambled to his feet, ignoring the pain in his left knee, and cursed at Whitney. “You’ve certainly taken away any other options.”

She was smiling like a cat in a sunbeam, eyes pinched shut with bliss. “Death is their only option, Colin.” She opened her eyes and addressed the rest of the group. “I hope you’re all armed.” She popped up from the ground and bounded across the highway like a deer toward the bloodshed.

Colin cursed again and began chasing after her with his own rifle until June shouted his name, stopping him in his tracks.

She caught up and grabbed his wrist, squeezing hard. “She’s dangerous. Let her run into the burning building head-on if she wants to, but we’re taking this slowly, so we can run if there’s anyone still inside.”

“Gil and I will bring the car up to the building if we need to… escape,” Jacob said, trembling. He didn’t wait for an answer before grabbing Gil and walking back toward the garage housing the Buick.

“Are they coming back?” Colin asked dryly. The color drained from June’s face, but he told her not to worry. “They wouldn’t leave you behind,” he joked, but the humor fell flat, so he pivoted. “You should go with them. I don’t want you to get hurt.”

Her growled answer surprised him. “You don’t need to protect me, and I’m not letting you run off to your death with… her. She’s lost it, Colin.
